Montana huckleberries only grow wild above 5,000 feet, ripen mid-July through August, and are worth every mile of hiking it takes to find them. That flavor — intensely sweet-tart — meets moonshine here in the most straightforward way possible. Two things Montana does better than anywhere else.
Ingredients
- 2 oz moonshine
- 1 oz huckleberry juice or 10-12 fresh/frozen huckleberries
- ½ oz simple syrup
- ½ oz fresh lemon juice
- Club soda to top
- Ice, garnish with fresh berries
How to Make It
1
Muddle 10-12 huckleberries in a shaker until fully broken down.
2
Add ice, moonshine, lemon juice, and simple syrup. Shake 12-15 seconds.
3
Double-strain into a tall glass over fresh ice.
4
Top with club soda. Garnish with whole berries. Serve immediately.
Pro Tips
- Frozen huckleberries work perfectly — thaw slightly before muddling.
- 1 tsp huckleberry jam substitutes well when fresh aren't available.
- The lemon lifts the berry and keeps it from going too sweet — don't skip it.
